(#2) Let's Argue About Flash Mobs

This assignment will require two developed paragraphs to complete your answer. In the first, argue in favor of flash mobs. That is, identify the "positive" qualities and results of flash mobbing. In the second, argue against flash mobs. That is, identify the "negative" qualities and results of flash mobbing and mobs in general. Each argumentative statement should constitute the topic sentence of these paragraphs.

Vitally, you should employ one distinct pattern of organization, or rhetorical device, in each paragraph. Be sure to head each paragraph with a label that identifies which pattern or device you are using to argue your point. See Hacker's textbook, pages 32-45, for information regarding patterns of organization and rhetorical devices.

Be sure that you include at least one direct reference (i.e., quotation) from one of the course texts in each paragraph. These references should be parenthetically cited according to APA or MLA format and thoroughly explained so as to best support the paragraphs' topic sentences.

Please post your answer to this prompt below as a comment. (Due before class meets on Tue, 2/19)

  1. In favor of Flash Mobs using Linking ideas clearly
There are many positive qualities and results of flash mobs. An example of how flash mobs can be used is that they can raise awareness of an event such as people’s rights and equality. The method of doing so would be conveying through their message interactively and creatively to the people by using dance. This can influence others so that they may wish to join future flash mob events.
According to Georgiana Gore, “flash mobbing is like soft terrorism, using guerrilla tactics, which explains why it is a good medium for communicating a succinct message, as it is retained because of its difference with the habitual, because it creates a shift in focus”(130).
The Flash mob is an effective way to capture people’s attention, because if you see a group of people dancing randomly the initial reaction is stop and watch in order to find out why they are dancing, since we enjoin entertainment. Versus the method of using flyers, which usually are not noticed as much because flyers are everywhere, but random people dancing does not always occur on a daily basis. So it is a form of peaceful protest.
Against Flash Mobs using Linking ideas clearly
Flash mobs are seen as negative because there is no set time or location where they can occur, as a result they can be deemed as a nuisance to society. If a flash mobs occurs in a university library and the students there are studying for finals. Despite the fact that students enjoy entertainment, since they are preoccupied this would be a distraction to their studies. Especially since Flash Mobs are usually performed with music and the library should be a quiet environment.
Otto Pohl from Berlin journal, “Brimming with such a lack of purpose, the fad has found a home in Berlin and across Germany. On Monday, at 5:05 p.m., mobbers have been called to gather at the washing machine display in a department store in the German city of Dortmund, eat banana and leave”.
Another way it may be negative is because it has no censor. It can be inappropriate for young audience: if the performers are dressed inappropriately or have a message that may not be supported by the community they are performing in than that could be offensive to some people. As a result it is pointless and disturbing.

Flash Mobs can have many positive qualities and results by allowing participants to step out of their cultural norm and forces communication. On January 13, 2013 Flash Mob participants took part in the “No Pants Subway Ride”. In the middle of winter, participants rode the New York City subway without pants. By ridding the subway without pants the participants stepped out of their norm, they would not normally ride the subway in the middle of winter without pants. Flash Mobs gatherings also brings strangers together for example in the “No Pants Subway Ride” other passengers who were fully clothed wanted to know what was taking place thus forcing them to communicate with strangers to find out what was taking place. The event also made participants and passengers to have eye contact which put a smile on both their faces which initiates communication amongst strangers. This event made New Yorkers step out of their norm because New Yorkers do not normally smile or speak to strangers. Flash Mob caused participants and on lookers to socialize even if only by smiling which is a positive quality and result of Flash Mobs.

    Example and Illustrations

Flash Mobs can be pointless and a waste of tax payers’ dollars. For example in the Flash Mob gathering of “No Pants Subway Ride” there was no positive point to this, only for the participants to suffer hyperthermia later. Flash Mobs gathering is a waste tax payers dollars for the fact of security presence. For example if the authority becomes aware of a Flash Mob in progress they will request the presence of the police, FBI and what whatever other security may be needed to protect the citizens. According to Otto Pohl when the Flash Mobs gathered in Berlin’s street where they shouted “yes, yes into their cell phones then began to clap; a contingent of 11 policemen stood by, unsure what to do.” Flash Mobs are pointless and purposeless as there is no sense to make of it, just a set of people who have nothing better to do than to waste time.

The growing popularity of flash mobs has been beneficial to our society. This phenomenon can be a fun, edgy way to bring awareness to social issues. The use of technology, music, and dance attracts a younger demographic to participate in social changes. In “Cultural Resistance Reader” by Stephen Duncombe, he describes a crowd of men, women, and a bright blue bunny, dressed in elaborate costumes and painted faces, dancing in the streets to the sounds of their boom boxes. Law enforcement arrived and did not know how to respond to a protest that did not resemble a typical protest. According to Duncombe, “The protest itself spoke more eloquently about reclaiming the streets for free and public expression than any photocopied sheet of indictments and demands.” This extravagant, yet peaceful demonstration, voiced their political views, but did so in a way that engaged a younger demographic and captured the attention of curious spectators. Flash mobs unify people for a common cause which is a step in the right direction in our society.

    Examples and Illustration
Flash mobs can be a distraction. The elaborate themes and theatrics may capture a large audience, but the message they are trying to convey is sometimes lost in it all. In a New York Times article by Otto Pohl, he refers to a flash mob that occurred in a department store in Germany. Mobbers gathered at a washing machine display, ate a banana and then left. These demonstrations as Pohl describes, are “brimming with such a lack of purpose...” If there was some meaning to this spectacle, it was lost on Pohl and I’m sure many others. By putting on a pointless or indecipherable show, these mobbers have stolen the focus away from relevant social issues.

  4. Cause and Effect
The effectiveness of flash mobs results from their many positive qualities that include conveying a message, attracting attention, and spectacle performances. Although the Oxford English Dictionary defines flash mobs as pointless, that is rarely the case. It may seem to be pointless for some observers; however, there are many reasons that flash mobs are performed. Most flash mobs are created for reasons such as celebrations, political activism, and commercial advertisements (Gore 126-127). One of the most important aspects behind flash mobbing is staying within the law and ensuring non-violent performances that attract attention. “The very reconfiguration, through the dancing, of the layout of public space forces attention on the performance…” (Gore 128). The size of flash mobs and their performances in these public places forces the audience’s attention. A major benefit to flash mobs is that they are temporary, but memorable. The scale of the performances and the fact that they are unexpected, leave a lasting memory in the minds of the audience. Despite what some might think, flash mobs contain many positive qualities that make them very effective.

    Examples and Illustrations
Flash mobs have earned a bad reputation after multiple encounters, leaving their audiences confused, disrupting traffic, and causing overcrowding dangers. Many would argue that flash mobs lack purpose and confuse their audience. Flash mobs are unexpected and only last a few minutes. By the time the audience realizes what is happening, the performance is over. For example, the flash mob in Berlin that consisted of about 40 people on their cell phones yelling, “Yes, yes!” left Margarethe Muller and many other people confused. She was told Jan Ullrich was there and when she realized he wasn’t she was disappointed and said “Can you please tell me what’s going on?” (Pohl) The onlookers had no idea what was going on or the point behind the flash mob. Flash mobs are just a disruption of traffic flow. They are usually in public places, which force the people around to stop what they are doing. In order for a flash mob to attract attention, it has to be large scale. Some flash mobs are so large that they cause overcrowding dangers. For instance, the flash mob in London that was mimicking the T-mobile commercial consisted of 12,000 people. “…the police rapidly intervened because they perceived dangers of overcrowding” (Gore 128). In the end, flash mobs exhibit negative qualities that leave their audience with nothing but frustration.

  5. Flash mobs possessed so many qualities that contributed to their success beside their characteristics. A group of strangers gathered in public space showed that they had a sense of being free. In result, a community was formed and they will be able to share their concerns. They developed a sense of responsibility in which they took care of each other. They knew how to organize and how to get people’s attention. Some flash mobbing acted as performers. They prove themselves as talented people who knew how to pass their point across. They can be referred as artists because they knew how to entertain. Let’s consider the Glee’s performance series, a show seeing on TV, suddenly performing on a shopping center in a Spanish community (March 2010). Gore (1997) clarified that in this quote: “There is, however, a dynamic interplay between the appropriation by corporate business of flash mobbing and resistance through derision and displacement, by popular culture” (p.128). They had an excellent way of communicating their issues. According to (UKYCC 2000) we can be “creative, energetic and passionate” (p.129) when getting together for important cause.

On the other hand, flash mobbing had some negatives qualities that were very dangerous, and scary. Gore quotes” flash mobbing is like soft terrorism, using guerrilla tactics “(p.130). using violence showed that did not know how to communicate or protest pacifically It seemed that people were under dictator’s command. There were no fun, no laugh and entertainment. Instead, they were dealing with stress, panic, frustration and disappointment just to name a few. Let’s elaborate on the word “terrorism “this is a frighten word that put people in an alert condition. It means killing, torturing and terrifying others by any means. They did not set any good examples. Using guns or any heavy weapons to destroy and dismember people in a community to achieve a goal is a wrong method. Acting in such way can affect people emotionally, psychologically, and physically

  6. Definition
According to Tina Sieber, “flash mobs are large groups of people who gather at a public location to perform a pre-defined action” (Sieber). Flash mobs are initiated on-line. The organizers set up a web site, mail list, and/or a viral message that provides all necessary instructions for the participants. This includes the date, time, and meeting point, as well as the action that will be performed. Flash mobs disperse rapidly after the event is over. Flash mobs can have positive and negative effects.

    Examples and Illustrations
A positive effect of flash mobs is to bring the community together for a special cause. We see this occur in Gore’s writing about dance mobbing. We read, “In Louvre, Paris, in 2009, Paris Opera dancers came together for a fund raising gambit for the children’s charity Chain of Hope which aims to provide heart surgery for those unable to afford it” (Gore 127). An important aspect of flash mobbing is to stay within the law and to ensure non-violent performances that attract the attention of people. A major benefit to flash mobs is that they are temporary, but can leave lasting memories. Even though some people may feel flash mobs are pointless, you can see that there are some positive qualities to them.

    Examples and Illustrations
Flash mobbing has negative aspects too. “It intrudes into individual and collective routines, it disrupts schedules and programs tearing into time frames, slowing down the speedy and speeding up the slow” (Gore 130). In Sheena Bizarre, “Train Parties,” we see how the daily routine of a train ride is disrupted. “There was a brass band on one side, and a boy with a boom box pumping techno on the other. We danced around. We were given cups full of red wine. We smoked pot, and smiled at one another” (Bizarre 116). This message may have not been suitable for all involved. For instance, if a pregnant woman was to inhale the smoke of the pot, this could have dangerous effects to her unborn fetus. This is an extrinsic factor that can cause developmental problems. Also, for the under-aged children aboard this train, the mob was exhibiting a negative experience for them. The negative experience of seeing people smoking pot and drinking wine could lead them to experiment smoking pot and drinking with their peers. Blasting music, drinking wine, and smoking pot could also lead to breaking the laws of the MTA which could cause summons and arrest. Therefore, flash mobs have negative effects too.

  7. In Favor of Flash Mobs using Description

Sometimes when one participates in something with others, they feel a sense of worth, more confident, happy and they can also learn how to socialize better with others. All this can happen by participating in a flash mob. According to Georgiana Gore, “A flash mob is described as ' a public gathering of complete strangers, organised via the internet or mobile phone, who perform a pointless act and then disperse...'” (126). This all starts by someone coming up with a cause, for example, bullying. After one decides on the cause, he or she will pick a song, a theme, a location, and a time. Now this is where the socialization comes in where people start contacting others via email, texting, word of mouth, online and other social media groups. Once the date comes, it would start out with one person dancing and then all the others would all join in. When the the whole thing is over, everyone would disperse very quickly back to what they were doing prior. The results of this will therefore promote communication between onlooking bystanders and also the people in the flash mob itself. I feel that it promotes a sense of happiness when others unify. I look at all this as a positive in the favor of dance mobbing.

Not in favor of Flash Mobs using Examples

Unarguably, not everyone in this world sees flash mobs as a positive. Although focusing on the positive ones are much more fun. Sometimes flash mobs can be seen as negative in the eyes of the outsiders. According to Otto Pohl, he states that Howard Rheingold asks a simple question: “'Right now, it's just people wanting to do something silly and it's not hurting anybody, so what's the harm?'”(2). Apparently some people have taken flash mobs to a negative extreme. For example, recently on channel 2 news, there was a flash mob mayhem of teenagers who were ransacking street vendors. A crowd of them would rush at the vendor, take candy and other displayed items, and then disperse rapidly. In one particular instance, there was an older gentlemen who had broken his arm due to the carelessness of the teenagers' pushing and shoving to get to the merchandise. The flash mob has not only hurt an individual; but has also caused several vendors to shut down for a couple of hours in the afternoon due to these violent acts. So, in your face Rheingold, this I say is not positive and is extremely negative.

  8. The term Flash Mob is defined according to the Oxford English Dictionary, as a public gathering of complete strangers, organized via the Internet or mobile phone, who perform a pointless act and then disperse again. Participating in a flash mob bonds the audience and participants out of curiosity. Flash mobs are innocent, if mysterious and tend to bring together loose groupings of surprisingly conventional looking young adults. (Pohl, 2003)
Even though the flash mob creates a bond between the audience and its participants, Not only was the flash mob a vacuous fad; it was in its very form (pointless aggression and then dispersal), intended as metaphor for the hollow hipster culture that spawned it. (Wasik, 2006 p. 56) According to some observers the flash mob, …[It was reminiscent of yippie prankster action…]

  9. EXAMPLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
There are many reasons showing that flash mobs have positive qualities. First of all such events bring complete strangers together in order to express an idea that they all approve, or just wish to show the world that they exist. This proves that we humans like to get together. That we like to participate. That even though we do not know each other, we like to feel that we are not alone in this world, that there are people just like us, with the same ideas, with the same needs and feelings. Flash mobs definitely let us experience all of that. Even Bill Wasik in his report, "My Crowd", says: "What the project harnessed was the joining urge (…)" (Wasik 58). People want to be noticed. Flash mob is a great way of doing that. Instead of doing something illegal or violent, we can express ourselves in a completely peaceful way. Also, flash mobs very often attract media which is important in order to show the world your point of view. In that way the message can get across way quicker. In addition flash mobs let you get away from the boring daily routine. It can give you a satisfaction that you did something to improve the current situation in the world, or at least make people think about a problem that they did not know it existed.
On the other hand flash mobs can be seen as something negative. They can impede people's daily routine and plans. Since, flash mobs take place in public places, it disrupts the normal order of things. It can make it hard for people to get to work, school, or any other place if the flash mob takes place in a train, for example. Some people do not find flash mobs as an act that has any meaning. According to the Oxford English Dictionary flash mob is a "public gathering of complete strangers organized via the Internet or mobile phone who perform a pointless act (…)" (Wasik 57). Flash mobbing has no specific point. The task of it is not clear. It only creates chaos. Using the same techniques i.e. contacting with the use of the newest technology made possible to gather in order to perform vandalism. In an article "Fear factor: Does NYC have a mob problem"?, Cyril Josh Barker writes: "youth have been using the tactics (…) and rioting, vandalizing and even assaulting innocent people" (Barker 3). In one of a shopping malls group of teenagers beat people and destroyed displays. Flash mobs are illegal, devastating and violent intention. They put the public safety in danger.

  10. Contrary to many beliefs, flash mobs are rarely pointless, and therefore elicit a number of positive qualities and results. Evident to the writings’ of Bey, Duncombe, Gore, and Pohl, flash mobs are non-violent, purposeful events that constitutes the gathering of people with similar interest. To further express the qualities, as well as results, of a flash mob, it was observe where some assume a political interest, and outcome, such as the “Oxfam-groove your Bump,” of 2008 (129), presented in Gore’s research. This flash mob involved pregnant participants who expressed their need for health care facilities to aid childbirth difficulties (129). Other flash mobs are done for commercial purposes, such as the flash mobbing of 100 dancers who danced to the song, “Put A Ring on it,” Beyonce’s hit single; in the event of promoting ticket sales for Beyonce’s concert for capital gain (129). So in closing, it can be seen where a flash mob elicits positive qualities, which prompts desired results as noted.

On the other side, many may ague that flash mobs are pointless, and initiate negative qualities and results. Howard Rheingold, a sub-author from Pohl’s article, states that “flash mobs… is just people wanting to do something silly.” In addition, others (in society) perceive flash mobbing simple as “proof of society’s decay[;]” believing that flash mobbing is a degradable and useless events. To argue in favor of such beliefs, the flash mobs that are solely established for fun can be seen as pointless and irrelevant; such as the flash mob described in Pohl’s article, about people on their phone shouting YES! Followed by the synchrony of clapping their hand. So to be succinct, it can be concluded that flash mobs possess negative qualities such as being constructed from participants suffering from boredom, and gathering for a pointless and trivial act. And as a result of such act, degradation of the society will unfold.

  11. Identifying the "positive" qualities and results of flash mobbing
Positive qualities of flash mobbing article is how “invited by text messages, email and blogging, some hundred people gathered around a $10,000 carpet in the furnishing department of Macys…for ten minutes they discussed amongst themselves and with the sales people, purchasing the rug for their free love commute, to use it as a “love rug” (Gore 125) this illustrates the power of communication and technology is being used to promote events and awareness which affect an community. This form of notifying the masses is used today and is a positive quality in flash mobbing. Another example show the positive qualities flash mob has is according to Gore (127) “what was unique about the flash mob was the centrality of a mobile communication technology the mob, which itself has historically been used as a technology to “ bend” public spaces of significance.. and as a medium of area of exchange for participants (2005).
Identifying the "negative" qualities and results of flash mobbing and mobs.
In the online version of the Oxford English dictionary a flash mob is described as a “ public gathering of complete strangers, organized via the internet or mobile phone, who perform a pointless act and then disperse..’ a definition which might possibly account for its first manifestations in 2003 ( Gore 126). Repeatedly this article is describing flash mobs to be “pointless” and useless.

  12. There are many cases illustrating both positive and negative qualities of flash mob. According to all of our readings, flash mob is a group of individuals who gathers in an assigned place, they perform some king of act which might be pointless then they quickly disappear.
A positive quality of flash mob is that it brings total strangers together. They form this community just for this brief moment to stand as one for something they viewed as unfair, inhumane, and injustice. A clear example by Bill Wasik’s Manhattan flash mob in 2003, 100 or so people assembled in Macy’s department store to get this $10,000 carpet they called “love rug” (Gore 125) and they scattered. The message that they are trying to convey is that people are so used to entertainment, products and fashion being handed to them and follow the norm, that they are willing to pay that much for a piece of rug.
Some flash mobs are pointless and a waste of time. In “What: Mob Scene, Who: Strangers. Point: None” by Otto Pohl which the title already illustrate the notion that some flash mobs are worthless. In Germany, people were informed on Monday at 5:05pm to get together in a department store “[to] eat a banana, and leave,” this example clearly shows that people are in a way making a mockery of what it means to flash mobbing.

      Positive Examples of Flash Mob
A positive quality of flash mob is that it brings total strangers together. They form this community just for this brief moment to stand as one for something they viewed as unfair, inhumane, and injustice. A clear example by Bill Wasik’s Manhattan flash mob in 2003, 100 or so people assembled in Macy’s department store to get this $10,000 carpet they called “love rug” (Gore 125), they convince the clerks that they will indeed by this rug and they scattered. From my own perspective, I think message that is being display is that people are so used to entertainment, products and fashion being handed to them and follow the norm, that they are willing to pay for a piece of rug.

Flash mob might also be used as a foundation to help people in need. A clear example of “Dance mobbing” (Gore 125). Marie-Agnes Gillot uses flash mob as a charity event to benefit heart surgery for children that are not capable of having the money to pay. This event demonstrates awareness, and really provide hope for those poor kids.

      Negative Examples of Flash Mob

Some flash mobs are pointless and a waste of time. In “What: Mob Scene, Who: Strangers. Point: None” by Otto Pohl which the title already illustrate the notion that some flash mobs are worthless. In Germany, people were informed on Monday at 5:05pm to get together in a department store “[to] eat a banana, and leave,” this example clearly shows that people are, in a way making a mockery of what it means to flash mobbing.

Flash mob is peaceful, happy and sometimes pointless, but in no way should it be violent. An obvious illustration by Cyril Josh Barker’s “Fear Factor: Does NYC have a mob problem.” He writes there were this incident at Jacob Javits Center where people were arrested and shots with BB guns, and was told by business owners that the event happens every Easter Sunday. Graham Witherspoon says “You don’t go around and destroy stuff and call if fun” (Barker 3), when people think of flash mob they think it’s all fun, peaceful, but forming some type of gathering to break people stuff is not the ideal flash mob.

  13. Example and Illustrations

Flashing mobbing has emblematized positive qualities through fun and unity of different cultures. Otto Pohl defines flash mobs by stating, “The activities are innocent, if mysterious, and tend to bring together loose groupings of surprisingly conventional looking young adults. For example, the flash mob of the 40 people that pulled out their cell phones and began jeering yes then started clapping. In the picture in the article by Pohl people seem to have a happy expression. The general purpose of a flash mob is to create a buoyant assemblage of people to catch the attention and confuse bystanders with mystery. They depend on the Internet to fan out information about the event and individuals gather and disperse quickly to avoid getting in trouble with law enforcement. Using technology to speak amongst themselves creates a sense of uniqueness to these flash mobs because this is how they organize these events. A flash mob usually does not have a political reason for their gathering the point of a flash mob is to have fun. Having fun brings people together as a union. Another positive quality is participants do not include people who are not engaged in taking part of the flash mob to prevent angering a passerby which preserves the innocent of the event. In addition, people of different races combine so the focus is not maintained on one particular person, but on the group of people as a whole. Race is a definitely irrelevant while the flash mob is taking place.

    Example and Illustrations

While flashing mobbing may have several positive aspects, it also renders negative qualities. Hypothetically, flash mobs unite people of different classes; this is rather a skeptical idea when considering the fact that only those who can access the internet can engage in flash mobbing which ostracizes the poor. Furthermore, flash mobs can sometimes be a risky occurrence. Taking a look at the flash mob Oxfam, Gore adduces “The impact of physically risky dancing is multiplied by the women’s visible pregnancy.” (129) A group of pregnant women began to break dance to express child birth difficulties and to the lack of care facilities throughout the world. Their efforts at delivering this message could have affected their gestation.

  14. Flash Mobs are great for society. It is a way of bringing complete strangers together, for example the short article “Train Parties” by Sheena Bizzare stated ``The first passenger was a man in his fifties. He turned to me and said `This is why I love NY. I’ve been in LA for a few years now, and this is why I came back! I love NY……. He opened his bag to reveal wine bottles and passes them around. `He stated this is the best day of my life!`”. This would almost never occur, complete strangers interacting and sharing as if they knew each other for years. They formed a bond, unity which would have not happened otherwise. This particular flash mob also helped promote the city of NY. Tourist encounter these types of events that they never been exposed to and makes them want to come back, stimulating that cities economy. Helping the hotel industry, restaurants, car rentals, department stores ect.

Flash Mobs are horrible events and should never occur. These events are pointless and disturb the peace. For example, on August 3rd 2003 in Berlin, All at once at 6:01 on Friday evening, about 40 people in the middle of a crowed street pulled out their cellphones and started shouting “yes, yes!” Then they began clapping a contingent of 11 policemen stood by, unsure what to do.. Instead of people engaging in such non-sense they should put all that energy into something more productive in society. Even thou these “flash mobs” are supposedly non-violent but when there are gatherings In public places, you still need the presence of the authority there just in case things escalade into something else as we saw in the example. That is why flash mobs should not be tolerated.

Tourist encounter these types of events that they never been exposed to and makes them want to come back, stimulating that cities economy. Helping the hotel industry, restaurants, car rentals, department stores ect.

      Against Flash Mobs

That is why flash mobs should not be tolerated

  15. Flash mobs are formed for many different reasons and purposes. They are formed by any type of group of people whom are trying to state something or carry out a certain massage into the public. Like everything in life, this has its pros and cons.

People form flash mobs, sometimes to fix issues that they might find isn’t fair or wrong. They might disagree with a law that has been passed or and unfair act. They may be fighting for humanity and ones rights are possible to form a flash mob. A positive quality of a flash mob is getting the public, government, society and states attention. It gives the people a chance and opportunity to get their word out to the people; they want their voice to be heard. Flash mobs are harmless, playful, and unexpected events. They are not criminal acts by design. Flash mobs and crimes are two completely different phenomena. They do not exist on the same field. The flash mob’s purpose is part of why it is afforded legal protections. The purpose of speech can sometimes have very important constitutional allegations. For example, we punish people who print libel, and we criminalize vulgarity when it reaches a certain point. Commercial speech does not have the same protections as noncommercial speech.

On the other hand, flash mobs can be really out of the blue and disrupt public space if not done for a good purpose. As stated in the article, “Flash Mobs” by Berlin, people just appear, start something, and make people wonder what’s going on. If there’s not a stable reason for forming a flash mob, then it shouldn’t take place. If it doesn’t have to do with sending a message out to the community then people shouldn’t waste their time, I feel that it makes circumstances worse. Flash mobs shouldn’t be formed for small issues that can be discussed and fixed. In my opinion there’s no point in forming flash mobs if the residents are getting nothing out of it. It shouldn’t be a mystery, everyone should join in, whether they agree or disagree. Flash mobs can also get very dangerous my personal reason is it can lead to the destruction of private property, rioting, violence, and personal injury. No one should get hurt or get in a brawl over a flash mob.

  16. Examples and Illustrations

The “positive” aspects of flash mobbing are the messages and fun that they bring to the participants. According to Roger Caillois (1958) flash mobbing is a form of play [and a] sense of being free, uncertain, unproductive yet regulated and make-believe (126). This is depicted through the various events cross country. Through mass digital communication hundreds of people gather simply to do things out of the ordinary and leave within the time frame of ten minutes. They are against and do not promote violence on any levels. They allow people to break out of the expectations and to some extent be kids again.

    Examples and Illustrations

The “negative” side of mobbing in general has no limitations or guidelines and is strictly impulsive. In some crowd situations, mob like behavior may emerge as being in a crowd seems to offer the opportunity to ‘lose one’s mind’, and thereby to lose the normal social controls that guide decent human interaction. The so called mob mentality describes the situation in which the crowd dictates the general behavior over and beyond the individual (Rob White, 2006, 3). This type of lost of autonomy is dangerous because that leaves a greater chance of getting caught up in the excitement and not taking in to account the full extent of the damage being done. The heightened chance of things getting out of control is greatly contributed to those participating being intoxicated.

According to Cyril Josh Barker, "Fear Factor: Does NYC have a mob problem?" he explains that "A flash mob is a gathering of people organized by e-mail, social networking or telecommunications, such as text messaging. In the past, the practice has been used for more humorous occasions like snowball fights and even sing alongs."

    Description
When it comes to Flash Mobs, there are many positive qualities about them. The first thing that comes to mind to me, is the excitement of them. For example, the " No Pants Subway Ride". One year I had witnessed it as the audience. An even like such, is something that is definitely not done everyday. So, it brings individuals out of their comfort zone in a good way. I saw so many people communicating about it and talking about their past experiences getting involved in this event in the past years. Flash mobs bring people together whether they are already friends or complete strangers and getting to know one another because they have something in common. I saw so much more communication amongst people than usual. Its great to see individuals conversing and having fun together instead of fighting or being ignorant like we would usually see on subways. There were individuals that had so many different unique underwear on such as, character boxers, briefs in different colors, boy shorts and even babies in just their diapers. Even though I didn't participate, it still took me out of my norm and I enjoyed observing an even that happens annually in New York. Not all the time is is set in a certain location, but with social networking, people end up knowing where to meet.

    Description
There are also negative qualities when it comes to Flash Mobs. Back to the event of the
"No Pants Subway Ride", there were also many riders who didn't like the idea because they felt that some took it overboard. There were children also who were on the train at the time and some parents found it to be very inappropriate for individuals to sit around in their underwear on the subway. For example, there was one younger woman that wore a certain type of underwear that exposed some of her bottom. I overheard someone say that that was disrespectful and inappropriate. Some could call the police to come witness the event because they feel its not right and it will just make a bigger than what it already is. Another negative quality is, peoples safety. People need to be aware of how they dress for this form of Flash Mob because harassment could take place as well. Over all, the biggest negative quality is the pointlessness of it all. Otto Pohl states in his article "As might be suspected, New York is the acknowledged place where people first used the latest technology to gather and delight in pointlessness."

Flash mobs occur when people takes up a “free space”, TAZ, to create some sort of awareness. Bey conveys how TAZ is synonymous to an uprising, a temporary revolt than a revolution which permanent. But when we think about the word uprising, a lot of negative connotation is associated with it. However, these uprisings have positive qualities and results. These uprisings are temporary and leave a lasting impression on those who experience or are involved in the spectacle. According to Bey, these moments of intensity give shape and meaning to the entirety of a life. The uprising do not interfere with the law, a benevolent form of protest […] that liberates an area (of land, of time, of imagination) and then dissolves itself to reform, elsewhere/elsewhen, before the state can crush it (117). Flash mobs give people a sense of autonomy, an exemption from external control, and independence. It is recommended for an uprising without leading to violence and martyrdom (116). People are left with experience and adrenaline at its peak. It is an exclusivity that gives you a sense of solidarity with strangers fighting for the same cause.

The community is unaware of when this flash mob is taking place, so when seen, it leads to the state of confusion and anxiety of outsiders (law enforcement), spectators, and passerby’s’ who do not recognize it. In the absence of effective dialogue with local communities there is real risk for confrontational policing (Rob White, 5). That leaves the question, what is the point of the “cause” if the general public is clueless.

Flash mobs can be used as a non – violent tactic to help gain publicity for a cause or political protest. It is a creative different approach to protest. A lot of the time when a flash mob happens, if it is a protest it doesn’t even look like a protest. ”Also most flash mobs try to stay within the realms of the law.” (Pohl, times) It also brings entertainment to the general public in the area of the flash mob. Flash mobs can be an entertaining way to bring awareness to a cause that many before it would not be aware of. Flash mobs have been used to raise money, for entertainment, and even to make people aware of climate change.

    Against flash mobs
Flash mobs are a poor excuse for people who have nothing better to do and have a lot of time on their hands. They are silly as well as purposeless and cause havoc to people in the area of the mob and it disturbs the peace, as well as everyone’s daily routines. Many see it as “proof of society’s decay”. (Pohl, times) What purpose is there for 500 people to cower down to a giant T-Rex in a toy store? Do 500 people have nothing better to do with their lives? Flash mob are also being used by corporations for monetary gain. Its bad enough we have enough advertisements. We don’t need another moving acting advertisement as well.

    Let’s Argue about Flash Mobs

What is the purpose of a “flash mob?” To me the purpose of a flash mob is to get a point across. It is when a group of many individuals join together in a public place and are engaged in an unusual event. But the thing with flash mobbing is that it does not last for a long time. It is a quick and sudden act that is done. With flash mobbing being performed, it has its negatives and its positives towards society.
The positive quality towards flash mobbing is that it helps to get a point across. There is a time in life where we want to be heard and see changes being done. The only thing about this is how to get it done. Flash mobbing helps to represent an issue that needs to be taking care of. It makes the issue more aware for others to know that it is a problem. Hopefully with someone speaking out there the problem can be solved. Some people might think that flash mobbing is nothing but it will become something when many people join together and stick with one another. That way everyone’s voice will be heard.
The negative qualities towards flash mobbing are that sometimes people flash mob for no reason. It just becomes a pointless act at times because people are not engaged in it. In addition, flash mobbing can lead to individuals may feel a certain way and view a topic differently. This can lead to fights breaking out. Flash mobbing can also leave many individual confused and frustrated because they are not explaining what they are trying to get across properly. As you can see, flash mobbing has its pros and cons towards it. It can lead to different views.

    In Favor of Flash Mobs.

The positive effect of flash mob is that it helps create a sense of social identification and belonging. Individuals who participate in any flash mob gathering are able to unite with like-minded people that share similar ideas and beliefs. “In a place of sour lefty cry of “No! We’re against it, “We yelled out triumphantly: “Yes! This is what we’re for.” I went to this planning meeting as a loyal skeptic, by the end of the afternoon I was a committed believer in the power of cultural resistance.” (Duncombe. 3). The Reclaim the streets flash mob gathering served as a medium for Duncombe to affiliate with other protesters fighting for the same cause. The gathering instilled rejuvenated energy and belief in him. It made him believe he was not alone. The phrase “United we stand, divided we fall” justifies the success of flash mobbing as it would never be successful without unity.

    Against Flash Mobs

Flash mobbing can be sometimes pointless and a waste of time. “All at once at 6:01 on Friday evening, about 40 people in the middle of the crowd started shouting, “yes, yes!” Then they began clapping.” (Pohl). A group of young individuals who take out precious time to carefully plan a gathering only to shout “yes, yes!” and then clap should not be making the news at all. This event not only caused unnecessary confusion and distraction amongst passers-by, it also invited the cops who were deemed superfluous upon arrival. The time invested in organizing the Berlin meeting could have been used for something else with a purpose.

Flash mobs are very useful because they present an outlet for citizens to bring awareness to different ideas that may concern them and ultimately society. Though flash mobs might be seen as purposeless by some, even in its most pointless form it still show the power of unison when a group of people decide to work together. Bill Wasik, who is regarded as the creator of the flash mob movement envisaged it to take on various characteristics, he argued that ‘It should convey a message, by the gathering of insiders, it should be transitory – meaning short live, take up limited physical space’. (Wasik 2006, pg 64, 65) If one looks at the main features of the flash mob movement, it noticeable that the purpose and intention of any flash mob comes with a message, even if it is to get people to observe an out of the norm event. Georgiana Gore in support of flash mob stated that “It is evident today that while for some flash mobbing may be just fun, as a public statement it is rarely if ever ‘pointless’”. (Gore 2010, pg 126) For example, even when the hundreds of people converged in Macy’s department store to discuss amongst themselves about the exorbitant price for the rug, there action was not purposeless in any way because following that, their action brought attend to Macy's and the price of rugs.

    Cause and Effect
Flash mobs are generally bad for any society because of its characteristics and prospective danger for participants. Having hundreds or even thousands of people in a confined spaced for any period of time is dangerous not only for the participants but also for innocent bystanders who might be sharing that same space for important reason/s for shopping or obtaining information about a product or issue. It’s my view that even from looking at the definition of flash mobbing makes the event pretty dangerous and even unmanageable for its organizers. Bill Wasik acknowledging the Oxford definition as “a public gathering of complete strangers, organized via the internet or mobile phone, who perform a pointless act and then disperse again” (Wasik 2006, pg 57). So even this reputable reference source sees flash mob as pointless, because no real purpose ever come out of having a large amount of people gather in one place but causing danger to others. I think Bill Wasik, who is regarded as the creator of the flash mob movement not agreeing with the dictionary definition tries to give flash mobbing his own characteristics, he argued that “Flash mobs were gathering of insiders, and as such could hardly communicate to those who did not already belong [.…] it should be transitory, ten minutes or less and thereby not exactly suited to standing their ground and testifying and in term of physical space, flash mob relied on constraints to create an illusion of superior strength”. (Wasik 2006, pg 64, 65). Even with his own edition and addition Wasik’s flash mobbing still breath a fear of danger. If you cause hundreds maybe thousands of people to converge in a small constraint space without taking into regards their safety and risks, the effects of your action will always be devastating even causing life and for what purpose? To look at an expensive rug at Macy’s or as highlighted in MOB # 6 where thousand turn out to stare at dinosaur at Toy’s R Us in Time Square. Wasik himself described the event as “It became a physical menace” (Wasik 2006, pg 66).

Because I have mixed feelings towards the flash mob concept and the uses to which it is often put, the format of this assignment is actually a good reflection of my views -- that is, both positive and negative, and so I am easily in touch with both sides of this controversial social phenomenon. Simply as an empowering act for those who take part in it, it can be viewed as a positive, cooperative mission that gives meaning to the hard work and quickly mobilized technical skills of many individuals coming together for a common goal; and for those viewers not preoccupied with other concerns, this unexpected and apparently unplanned event can be pleasing, at times even inspiring as only unpredictable event can be. And it is pleasingly democratic form of demonstrations allowing anyone who is interested the opportunity for direct participation: “Unlike conventional street theater, anyone may join in despite the clear boundary between performer and spectator” (Flash Mob Dance and the Territolisation of Urban Event, P.126). Certainly this aspect of easy access to such a colorful and dramatic event is what makes the flash mob situation so entertaining, stimulating and enjoyable.
Whatever the entertainment value and the feeling of theatrical excitement that flash mob activity provides to participant and spectator alike, in the final analysis it is really the manifestation of a cheap desire for publicity disguised as an exciting carnival like experience that is actually manipulative and disruptive rather than truly purposeful and beneficial. Even in the very staging of such an event, there is an unfair imposition of the will of those carrying out such a performance in public spaces and on those innocent bystanders who unwillingly get caught up, and often delayed by the unasked public display that has no legitimate or legal permission to waste the time and force itself on people who are there for other purposes. If people have the right of free expression under the conditions that society allows, then breaking the rules for purposes of “self-expression”, even when this takes an arguably legitimate form for an important reason, it must always be done with care so that a negative impact on the public at large does not defeat the entire purpose of the event itself, namely to influence people for the good. And a “negative influence” that few would think of that could take part in the flash mob in a negative ways would be the uninvited inclusion of troublemakers, pickpockets, or thieves. As one website critic warned, ‘flashmuggers’(My Crowd, Bill Wasik, P.59) are bound to show up “whenever there’s a group of young, naïve, wealthy…fashionistas to be found” (My Crowd, Bill Wasik). It must be emphasized that without the carnival like atmosphere to provide the opportunity, such activates would not take place so easily.
As I emailed you last night, the textbook that is required to do this assignment effectively has not yet reached me. In the information you sent I did not find the rhetorical data that would have enabled me to complete the assignment. I hope you will take this into account. Or if you could allow me re-work this material when I have access to the textbook, I believe I could do much more comprehensive job. Thank you.

The Flash Mob according to the Oxford English Dictionary is a “public gathering of complete strangers, organized via the internet or mobile phone, which perform a pointless act and then disperse…” (Gore, 2010, p. 126). Contrary to popular believe the flash mobs are not necessarily pointless but have many positive qualities. Flash mobs are fun ways of people getting together in an unconventional manner, an innocent activity, not harming anyone. One of the best things about flash mobs is that it is simple and doesn’t cost much. The beauty of the flash mobs is their ability to organize quickly by the use of e-mails, texts or cell phone. Using modern technology as a medium to exchange ideas and enable global spread to millions of people who would not have otherwise been exposed to its message. They are playful forms of protest that captures the public attention and encourages the audience to socialize and interact regardless of its objectives. It is a brilliant way of advertising a message, if you want to get a point across and get people talking.

One negative aspect of Flash Mobbing is they take an enormous amount of work to set up. These events have to be tightly orchestrated, with the help of willing participants and the practice of performances for it to go well. Another argument against flash mobs according to Georgiana Gore is its ability to ‘create a scene...disrupting the normal flow of activities’

( p. 125), of the public. This can lead to the danger of overcrowding for both actors and the audience. Although these events are basically just for fun, they have become a means for criminals to get away with petty crimes. Flash mobs in some states such as Philadelphia and New York have turn in a negative direction, involving property damage, personal assaults and rioting. This has resulted in people being arrested and even getting killed. The case of the flash mob on Easter Sunday, 2010, in New York, thirty-three people were arrested and four people were shot. According to Cyril Barker, “there’s nothing cultural about this”, and it is expected to only get worse (p. 31).

    Let’s Argue About Flash Mobs
    February 19, 2013

    Comparison and Contrast

As defined by Otto Pohl’s article in the New York Times, International section on August 4, 2003 entitled “What: Mob Scene, Who: Strangers, Point: None,” Flash mob is “called into being on a short notice by Web sites and e-mail distribution lists, flash mobs meet at an appointed time, engage in some organized spontaneity for a few minutes, the rapidly dispersed.” It is a trend that started in 2003 which has gained a lot of positive and negative criticism as to its style and purpose.

Flash mobs have gained a large demography of audience that has applauded and supported it by how it was executed. It is viewed as a way of expressing one self and is interpreted as awareness to others. It is a form of cultural resistance that has encouraged a lot of people to participate in such event to which people would feel involved that they would feel as being part of something. It is a form of a cultural experiment as to measuring how great its impact on people and how people would react on it. One of its great or positive qualities is that it has been very effective in the sense of getting people’s attention. People may not know why and what is about at the moment but one thing for sure is that it catches their attention. Another positive aspect of the flash mobs is that it provides people a new form of expressing themselves and a new form of social interaction. In this society today, people has become so busy with the daily grind that they don’t really have any alternative to stop, unwind, socialize and even to appreciate anything around. Through this form, people realize that they are not alone and that it gives them ideas on what other alternatives they can do to share to others whatever they want them to see. Also, in this way it has become a form of entertainment for all of us to appreciate others and to start thinking of how our ways of communicating has changed, as to how our society has changed.

Despite of Flash mob’s success on to getting people’s attention, it has gained a lot of negative criticism mainly because of its lack of purpose. True, it has gained a large group of audience that it catches everyone’s attention, but the real question is “for what?” Its lack of purpose left people hanging and may lose the interest of its audience because it is for nothing but an entertainment. It is executed for nothing. People take time off their daily lives to participate in such gathering for no reason at all. As for our society today, time has been such a valuable thing for everyone that we make every second count, therefore flash mob is viewed as a waste of time and a non sense act. As to its definition in the Oxford English Dictionary, “Flash mob is a public gathering with complete strangers, organized via Internet or mobile phone, who perform pointless act and disperse again.”(My Crowd, Bill Wasik, p.57) It is criticized as a creative outlet for the bored people who have nothing to do in their lives but to entertain themselves. Through this pointless act, people are left confused as to what happened and its relevant life, or in the particular place it happened.

Definition (In Favor of Flash Mob)

According to Pohl, “Flash Mob is called into being on a short notice by Web sites and e-mail distribution lists, flash mobs meet at an appointed time, engage in some organized spontaneity for a few minutes, then rapidly disperse.” (Otto Pohl, NY Times Berlin Journal) It is a trend that started in 2003 which gained a lot of attention to a large demography of audience. It is a new form of self expression and social interaction to which people can participate and share awareness to others who have wondered and have been confused to its role in the society and as to how they respond to it. It is a form of culture resistance that has opened doors to people to participate and appreciate freedom of self expression in a temporary way. A way that has brought people to get involved in such event where they would feel as being a part of something, that they would feel or somehow answer their confusion as to their importance in the society. Flash mob gives rise to a generation that has gained awareness and power to the people under the control of political structure. It’s an innovative way of showing the people its power and role in the society as to what they can do for a change to whatever issues that has been bothering them. According to Bey, “I believe that by extrapolating from the past and future stories about the “island in the net” we may collect evidence that a certain king of “free enclave” is not only possible in our time but also existent.” (Hakim Bey, From TAZ: Temporary Autonomous Zone, p.114-115) This power of the people has always been there even with all the political restrains and structure of control, flash mob has just triggered the people to the awareness of its existence. Flash mob has gained a great reputation on getting the people’s attention and the powerful form of awareness.

Comparison and Contrast (Against Flash Mob)

Despite Flash mob’s success on getting people’s attention, it has gained a lot of negative criticisms mainly because of its lack of purpose. True, it has received an outstanding response from its participants and audience, which it catches their attention, but the real question is “for what?” Its lack of purpose left people hanging and most of the time lead them to be more confused as to certain issues and situations. People may lose their interest to it because it is executed for no reason at all. People take their time off their daily lives to participate in such gathering for nothing that has put a dent on the reputation of flash mobbing and viewed as a joke or some form of entertainment. As said in Wasik’s article, “An impromptu gathering, organized by means of electronic communication, of the unemployed” (Bill Wasik, My Crowd, p.59) In our society today, time has been such a valuable thing for everyone that people make every second count, to which flash mob has been branded as a waste of time of the working masses and a non sense act. As defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, “Flash mob is a public gathering with complete strangers, organized via internet or mobile phone, who perform pointless act and disperse again.” (Bill Wasik, My Crowd, p.57) It is criticized as a creative outlet for the bored people who have nothing to do in their lives but to entertain themselves and to pass time. Through this pointless act, people are left confused as to what is happening and to its relevance in life, in our society in general or in the particular place it happened.

The main benefits of flash mobs are that they raise awareness for certain causes. Another benefit is the break from our ordain schedules, which has been proven to reduce stress when it happens from time to time. Also, It cerates a sense of community when everyone is doing the same exact thing at the same exact time.
Some negative factors may be is that at the end of the day the people are “disturbing the peace” in non-violent manner. The “flashers” are essentially taking power from the authorities in that brief moment of time. Can any harm come from that? Possibly.

In favor of the flash mobs movement
Flash mob is a comparison to Mother Nature’s lighting a crackling tear of light ripping through the sky on a cloudy day or blacken night. Assembled only for a very short period of time then disburse. When you think its finish then you hear the message behind it thunder ringing your ears letting those who did not see it will hear that lighting was there. These events are a positive to society because it allows you or the citizen’s to stop socialize or interact something that doesn’t happen much in urban areas. Otto, Pohl. “she spotted a man on a bicycle, decked out in the spandex peacock garb of serious cyclist, his cellphone in hand, and holding forth into a television camera. “That’s not Jan Ullrich,” she said, disappointed. “Can you please tell me what’s going on?”.” The New York Times International August 4, 2003 Berlin Journal.
    Against the flash mob movement
When a flash mobs crossing over from a trend to a fad it loses its meaning. Then you have people who just want to be a part of the movement not fully knowing why or what it stands for. This also goes for corporations that take it twist it in hopes of boosting capital revenue from their products. Wasik Bill. “Candid camera is a commercial activity. The overriding goal of the producer is to create materials that can be sold to a network or a sponsor….” Harper’s Magazine March 2006 56. Print.

Flash mobs made by some group of people who informing the percipents by text, internet, and e-mail. According to Georgiana Gore "flash mobs create new forms of sociality, regardless of whether the performance has political, economic or other objectives" (125). Flash mobs has positive effect in the society and on the other hand flash mobs has negative effect in the society.

There are many positive side and good quality flash mobs has in the society. Flash mobs impact the "audience'' (percipients) in a way which the human body is more or less conspiciously thrust into the public eyes and mobilised'' (Gore 129). Gore gave an example for flash mob which helped people to visual the problem and remember the event. He said “in this case of the single ladies, all hundreds were transformed to facsimile, Beyonce’s, whose dancing, in the promotional vedio clip for the song, they emulated. Although always on the show in the dancing, the body may be more or less enhanced by costume or other form altering devices which add a further eye-catching dimension” (129). In this quation he explain by flash mob that how a pragnent women to be aware about their “physically risky” to child birth and dificulties of giving birth their child. The event also showed the lack of careness of the pragnacy who has less facilities in the world when they are pragnent. A group of people showed the physical problem when womens are pragnent by dancing so those pragnent women could remember the event. So they can be careful about their pragnancy.

On the other hand flash mob has negative side too. Pohl said “Brimming with the such a lack of purpose, the fad found a home in Berlin and and across Germany. On Monady, at 5:05 p.m., mobbers have been called to gather at the washing machine display in a department store in the German city of Dortmund, eat a banana, and leave”. In this quation proves that flash mob don’t have any specific reason to gather with people. Flash mob make people to gather without any reason and specific time. The unnecessary meeting could have bad impact on flash mob which could lose audience interest about flash mob.

  31. Flash mods are very catching. It at tracks curiosity when a group of people assemble in a public place and exhibit some form of event or entertainment for a brief and limited time. It takes lots of communication (telecommunications), coordination, organizing, and good artistic stand. For example, a group simultaneously shows up, illustrates an action and discard before anyone can question their motive. It is a form of restricted resistance against people of authority. "The TAZ is like an uprising which does not enrage directly with the State, a guerrilla operation which liberates an area (of land, of time, of imagination) and then dissolves itself to reform elsewhere/elsewhen, before the State can crush it". (Bey 117) Flash mobs don't follow or break the laws of society. It borders the line between the two.

Flash mobs are pointless for their motives. They leave a lasting impression on the people who had seen it. Those people don't know why the flash mob had taken place. People are sometime confused because they don't know if its a protest. If it's not a protest then its entertainment, nothing more. It's purpose and symbolism lost its meaning because its not commercialized.

  32. Positive Argument about Flash Mob
Flash Mob is a spontaneous act where a group of people are involved with each other by using the social media such as emails, text messages, and cell phones. The crowd people who are connect in a Flash Mob the same intention. Flash mob people meet in public urban spaces, and a specific time and they disappear from each other. Flash Mob strategy is good because it does not have a special permission; do need to spend money to rent any place in order to conduct their business. For instance, in the article Flash Mob and the Territorialsation or Urban Movements by Georgiana Gore explains “Hundred people gathered around a $ 10,000 carpet in the furnishing department of Macy’s are a chick New York department store. For ten minutes they discussed among themselves and with the sales people, purchasing the rug for their free-love commune, to use it as a “Love rug” (125).This kind of activity can steal the attention of other customers in the Macy’s and flash mob does happen frequently. It is a new way of show ideas and attention to the public.
    Negative Argument about Flash Mob
Flash mob can be an uncomfortable and negative scenario because a hundred people in Macy’s rug department can confuse the other customers. Some people can feel frustrated because they can’t walk freely in the store. If there is handicapped person who is present can get confused, exhausted, walking around and leaves the store. When people who are involved in flash mob appear in a public place, this act can be annoying and be scaring. For instance, in New York Times Berlin Journal “what: Mob Scene. Who: St5rangers. Point: None.” By Otto

Pohl illustrated “ All at once at 6.01 on Friday evening, about 40 people in the middle of crowd of street pulled out their cell phones and started shouting “Yes, yes! Then they began clapping.” (August 4, 2003). This action can alarm someone especially to old person on the street.

    1. Argue About Flash Mob
Flash Mob is a spontaneous act where a group of people become connected through use of social media including emails, text messages, and cell phones. The crowd has come together because it shares a goal, to make a public statement and spread a message. An urban area is chosen, simultaneously an act is done, and then the group disperses. The flash mob strategy is good because it requires no special permission, and does not ask the participants to contribute money for renting a space. Also, the people involved do not need to spend a lot of time; the event occurs in short time and only takes few minutes to get done. In her article Flash Mob and the Territorialsation or Urban Movements, Georgiana Gore explains “Hundred people gathered around a $ 10,000 carpe in the furnishing department of Macy’s, a chic New York department store. For ten minutes, they discussed among themselves and with the sales people, purchasing the rug for their free-love commune, to use it as a ‘Love rug’.” This kind of activity gained the attention of others at Macy’s because it was strange and highly unexpected.
Flash Mobs can be uncomfortable scenarios for surrounding bystanders. For example, during the Macy’s ‘love rug’ episode, shoppers felt confused and annoyed because the store became crowded and chaotic. Sensitive persons like children, the elderly, or the handicapped can get lost or even hurt if the flash mob becomes too disorderly.
In addition, when people appear in a public place can annoyed, scared and confused other commuters in the community. New York Times author Otto Pohl describes a different example, “ All at once at 6.01 on Friday evening, about 40 people in the middle of crowd street pulled out their cell phones and started shouting “Yes, yes! Then they began clapping” (August 4, 2003). This action can frighten and confuse sensitive bystanders and is often described as unnecessary disruption by critics.

  33. The number one misconception about flash mobs lies in its official Oxford definition, disputed my many, of conducting a pointless act for a brief time. This premise of pointlessness is disproven by experiments conducted by Bill Watsik described in My Crowd Or, phase 5: A report from the inventor of the flash mob. Experiments are functional testing essentially used to discover information which is the logically analyzed to state findings. Watsik believes ideas of deindividuation has fallen into scientific neglect and suggests value in its theoretical processes. Watsik experimental flash mobs attempts to examine willingness of individuals to conform to assembled directed events and showed the overwhelming desire to join.

Flash Mobs allows for a gathering of an abundant amount of people which cases a presence however the time to demonstrate the message is short-lived. The short duration of Flash Mob events may cause mixed messages to the audience. The lack of duration and understanding of flash mobs may cause the down fall or an evolution in flash mobbing. Howard Rheingold author of "Smart Mobs: The next social revolution” suggest that flash mobs are part of a tread. Ultimately the short durations of flash mobs may increase which where a Flash mob cab become a long organized event.

Flash Mobbing brings out the enjoyment of being with people whether a person is participating or not Georgiana Gore, in her essay on Flash Mob Dance describes flash mobbing as a “new dance genre” (125). Flash Mobbing, she continues is fun and has a public statement behind it. (126) Flash mobs are used to get the attention of paying customers. The media, explained by Gore, uses flash mobbing as “sales pitches….unlike flash mobbing, the public chooses to come” (127). Although Gore does not think the public chooses to participate in a flash mob, it is the whole point of it. Participants reply to joining a flash mob by appearing and following instructions. The participants choose to come and enjoy that specific space in time for a reason.
    Compare and Contrast
Although the more the consumers the better the economy, the media uses flash mobs against its real purpose. Flash mobbing became a fad, as Bill Wasik would say in his essay “My Crowd,” The media allows for viewers to want to be a part of the next fad. This push causes people to participate in flash mobbing for fun and not for a purpose. This idea allows the media to push the definition of flash mobbing as pointless. Although flash mobbing gives a sense of freedom from the law and it feels good to not follow rules, people risk their jobs, life, and safety to participate in a flash mob. At any moment, a group of people can walk in the middle of the street, but what if an accident happens at the wrong time? Flash mobbing has a positive motive but can result in a negative outcome.

Flash Mobs are an interesting Phenomena. According to Georgiana Gore, Flash Mobs are "a new dance genre...consisting of one-off collective dance events organized in public spaces through mobile phone and internet communications". Flash mobs have a positive effect on people because they force people to socialize. When Organizing a flash mob people have to "spread the word" via modern day communications and they have to then meet and perform these acts in "Urban Public Places". An example of this socialization can be seen in the group that participated in the "No pants subway ride" in NYC. Once the public in the train saw these people in their underwear on the train, they asked questions? These forms of socialization bring forward a bigger picture and the anticipation of more random events. Flash Mobs are great in building Social Communication.

    Examples and Illustrations

An argument many have about Flash Mobs are that they are useless and that they waste public resources. According to Otto Pohl, A flash Mob that happened in Berlin on August 6th was "brimming with...a lack of purpose" and that when the police were called, they could not no anything because Flash Mobs dont really break the law. Pohl says "11 policemen stood by, unsure what to do". After reading Pohls article one can easily argue that the police should not be having to spend the tax dollars of others in these pointless events when there is tons of other places where they are needed. If the police are present at the flash mobs, what can they do? Its like tossing tax money in the trash.

According to Hakim A flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, and then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression and it should be “temporary”(113)
A lot of people might think that flash mobs are organized public performance for entertainment reasons. While seeing an internet video of a large crowd of people freeing in place in the middle of a busy train station can be fun, people do not think that sometimes there are very bad and violent acts that take place in the world which are also known as flash mobs. It is sad that the word flash mob gets a bad rap these days because of those who abuse our technology and our society is filled with so many careless people. All it takes is one bad person to ruin it for the rest of us. With today’s technology, there are numerous ways to connect with others and secretly organize gatherings without drawing too much attention. On one hand its great knowing that if you wanted to surprise a buddy for his birthday you can mass text your crew of friends to get everyone together for a birthday prank or joke. But right down the road, there could be a group of punks that are using mass text to organize a local group robbery or looting. This is only one of many reasons new technology can be great as well as very bad for our society. An individual might be at such a low point in their life and feel that they don't have any other choice but to use this advantage for their own personal greed. It is sad but true that many people out there are only concerned with themselves with little to no consideration for others misfortune. Job layoffs, tax issues and general high price increasing on goods can also be a factor in which one chooses to join a flash mob to reap the benefits of organized crime. There are so many leaders as well as followers in this world and many who are used to always following the lead of others might jump in strictly because that is what they are used to and don't know any other way. Followers can be quick to join a gathering mob good or bad more easily as the group number increases. a flash mob was clearly an assembly of people who unexpectedly appeared at the same location at the same time. Now, flash mobs began to incorporate robberies, but they occurred infrequently across the country.
a flash mob is a group of people who are organized via various mass communications to come together at a specified place and time, perform some (typically whimsical) action, then disperse.
