Please answer the following questions after reading and listening to Malcolm X's speech "The Ballot or the Bullet."

  1. Malcolm X calls himself a “Black Nationalist.” What does this mean? List a few of the characteristics of this ideology.

  1. Malcolm X talks about Black Nationalism as a "self-help philosophy". What he means through it is that when there is a common problem in a community, those who live there must organize themselves and do something about it. They should not wait for help from people who do not experience the same problem and have no interest in helping them. What they should do is create their own community, where all the residents become independent, and do not have to rely on anyone to fight for their rights. Only the people who live in that community know what is the best for them and what they need to improve the condition of the place they live in, therefore, only they can help themselves. The white man do not understand the needs of the black man and therefore it is impossible to put trust in them to make anything better for the black man. Also it is not in their interest to help someone that they are enemy of. White people would not have any benefit in helping them because they have their own problems to deal with in their communities. The white politicians only mislead the blacks to vote for them so that they gain their vote and win. However, their promises are just an illusion that disappear when they get the support. I think that Malcolm X in his speech is not really forcing people to fight, but only tells them that they have no other choice, that this is their only way to get their rights. He explains that being peaceful never brought any positive results. He gives examples how white people fought for their rights. He recalls that their motto was "liberty or death". He also compares other groups of people who fought for freedom not by "singing" but by force. He sees it exactly the same. He identifies a revolution as a violent and bloody movement. They must use some kind of violence to be seen and heard. He motivates his people to fight as other people did in history for their rights. He presents the white man as someone who is weak, who lost, who can be won with. Malcolm X agrees with the passage from the Declaration of Independence. Otherwise, he would not exhort people to do something about that situation where government does not let people lead a happy, free, fair life, where they have equal rights as the white people. He says that they are all under the same "Uncle Sam's jurisdiction". They expect to be treated equally as everyone else. The statement that best summarizes Malcolm X's speech is Whites have already organized themselves as a “nation” or race that merely looks out for its own interests; rather than integrate into this organization, Blacks must do the same things in their own community by maintaining separate political and economic institutions. It is because he never mentions to unite with whites. Instead he persuades them to educate themselves, not to trust whites and not to put any hope in them. He says to create their own communities where they would not need a white man.

    “Black Nationalist” people who urge separatism from white people and the establishment of self-governing Black communities. A few characteristics of “Black Nationalist” are: black empowerment, self-help, self-respect, self- acceptance, unity, and independence.

    2. Why is Malcolm X so skeptical about whether white politician and white liberal can be trusted to help the cause of Black Americans?
    Malcolm X is skeptical because in the past they have failed the Black Americans. They have deprived them of their rights.

    3. Is Malcolm X advocating for violence or is he merely predicting it, should voting rights not be successfully implemented?
    I feel that Malcolm X is merely predicting it because it is their right to vote.

Explain your answer.
    Yes, Malcolm X does agree with this passage because he believed that the government was destructive against the Black Americans therefore; they have the right to do something to fix it. They can institute a new government so it will affect their safety and happiness too.

  3. 1) Malcolm X strongly believe that black people must control their own destiny in this country by taking control of their own community so that all important decisions that affect their lives would come from their own group of people and not be forced upon them by the outsider-white majority. The important characteristics that define black nationalism pride in oneself, one’s race and one’s history, combined with the understanding that one must control all elements of one’s life and surroundings- one’s own community in order to establish working culture that benefit your own people.
    2) Because based on his knowledge of the actions of white politicians toward black people where real change is never the outcome.
    3) I think he is predicting it, because he is aware that no real outcome would possible if they don’t fight for their rights in a racist country that does not even acknowledge the problem. By titling his speech “Ballot or the Bullet” he is making it clear that if rights for black people cannot be achieved peacefully through voting and other “constructive means” then the force or the bullet is necessary option to bring about the necessary changes that would give their rights.
    4) I believe Malcolm X, would acknowledge the force and legitimacy of these words. But he would also point out that as they were instituted in the real world they applied to white people only in reality.
    5) b) Whites have already organized themselves as a “nation” or race that merely looks out for its own interests; rather than integrate into this organization, Blacks must do the same things in their own community by maintaining separate political and economic institutions.---Because a strong aspect of Malcolm X’s message points out that the white establishment has throughout history manipulated black people’s rights and suppressed their freedom and therefore they cannot be trusted to honor the legitimate rights or black people given their long history of dishonesty and suppression. So black people must make their build their own world on their own terms.

    A black nationalist means that he supports the separation of blacks and whites and a government that it’s controlled by its own people and not a person who has no interest at heart about their community. This ideology does not involve religion. Their common goal is to create a better life for themselves in their communities. Black nationalism is a “self-help program” to support each other, educate your people, and create job opportunities in their communities so they don’t have to rely on their enemies.

    2. Why is Malcolm X so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help the cause of Black Americans?
    He believes white politicians cannot relate to black Americans. They do not sincerely care for their housing, education, or jobs. White liberals are getting richer and richer while the black communities are getting poorer and poorer and only the black people can help better themselves if they take their own control.

    3. Is Malcolm X advocating for violence or is he merely predicting it, should voting rights not be successfully implemented?
    He mentions that the white communities have used violence to get where they have gotten and that if means necessary so will the black Americans. In order to be heard something drastic has to be done. I believe he is telling the people that in order for real change to occur they might have to resort to violence.

Explain your answer.
    Malcolm X agrees with this passage. His whole speech is about creating their own political and economic institution. Just like the white liberals govern their own communities, black people should essentially take a stand in trying to take over their communities by their own people. He believes in equality and human rights.

  5. 1. Malcolm X calls himself a “Black Nationalist freedom fighter” as he states he will not fight in one front, but on all fronts. Although he is Muslim, he is speaking to fight for all Blacks, no matter the religion. When it comes to politics and the economy, Blacks need to put religion aside and stand together to fight for their right to be leaders in their community. He stresses the fact that in order for the Black community to be strong as a whole, each person needs to put their differences aside and focus on their common “enemy.” Black Nationalism means that Blacks need to take control of their community in a political and economic aspect.
    2. Malcolm X is skeptical about white politicians and liberals because the only time they go into Black communities and promise to help them is during elections. White politicians go to these communities making false promises in order to get votes. Black only see the politicians during elections and Malcolm X points that out to show they can’t be trusted and don’t really care about the cause of Black Americans.
    3. Malcolm X is advocating violence in the event that voting rights not be successfully implemented. He describes voting as a “Revolution that won’t take bloodshed,” as long as Blacks have their say.
    4. Malcom X would agree with this passage for the Declaration of Independence because he is fighting for the same thing. In this passage, it give the right to the people to overthrow the government if it is not doing its job of implementing the rights of all Americans equally. Malcolm X is using the Black population to have a say in the government’s actions, and plans on taking action of his own if the rights of the Black community aren’t recognized equally to whites.

  6. 1) Malcolm X calls himself a “Black Nationalist.” What does this mean? List a few of the characteristics of this ideology.
    As he stated that his beliefs are between him and the creator that he serves, he does not “fight in any one front, but on all fronts,” therefore he is indeed a Black Nationalist Freedom Fighter. He believes that if you are black then you should stay in your among other black, and that blacks should have total economical control of their communities.
    A few characteristics of this ideology are unity, self determination, and independence.
    2) Why is Malcolm X so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help the cause of Black Americans?
    Malcolm X is Skeptical about the white politicians and White liberals in terms of helping the Black Americans because past actions from the whites have led him to believe otherwise. Meaning judging from how blacks were treated in the past, he argues that “the white man is too intelligent to let someone else (especially Black people) come and gain control of the economy.” For Malcolm, he believes that the Whites are only trying to get richer while making sure that the poor stays poor.

    Malcolm X is indeed advocating for violence because he constantly reinforcing that Black voters who votes for the Democratic Party are nothing but chumps. It seems like he saying that blacks are gullible enough to call themselves democrats, to keep on believe in the idea that of change that were promise to them yet aren’t being delivered. Malcolm X expresses that “Today it’s time to stop singing and start swinging. You can’t sing up on freedom, but you can swing up on some freedom.” So, he is telling the people what are they going to do about and if they are going to sit there and let the Whites play them as puppets.

    Malcolm X does agree with this passage but his whole point is this passage is not being implemented. Malcolm mentions that the government has failed Black Americans, and that every time the people tries to ‘alter’ or ‘abolish’ it, they end up with—although new government—but the same Dixiecrat.

Malcolm believes that express his skepticism that voting would not bring full equality for African-American. The only way is to establish of self-governing black communities. The characteristics of this ideology are controlling the politics and the economy in their community and remove the bad things such as alcoholism and drug addiction. Avoiding the bad things and bring in the good things to benefit our community.

  10. 1. Malcolm X refers to himself as a black nationalist, meaning following the DIY method, do it yourself. He believes that black people should control their own communities and have the final say in what goes on in their lives, not white politicians. He said white people only worry about themselves and don't care about others and neither should they. He said it doesn't matter what religion you are that if you are black you need to start thinking black. That means focusing on your own people and community and it's problems.
    2. Malcolm X doesn't trust white politicians because they have made promises to the black community before and have failed them. They said a whole bunch of stuff about change and then gave them nothing. Malcolm X said that black people were used by these politicians to get the black vote and then once in office they do nothing to help Black people.
    3. I think he is predicting it. He doesn't outright say go riot or go fight whitey! He is suggesting that if they can't get what they want by civil means which is the way of voting then perhaps other methods may be needed. He claimed that not one revolution in order for change wasnt done without some kind of violence. He also stated that they need to take action because sitting down saying we shall overcome won't get the change that they want.
    4. He agreed with the passage because he said that the government has failed them and as such they should create their own politicial society for them, by them, which involves them. They werent equal in the white mans society so they should create their own society.

    This is someone in the community that plays an active role in developing the minority groups. The activist advocates for equality in terms of education, employment and other basic opportunities that should be provided to all.


    2. Why is Malcolm X so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help the cause of Black Americans?
    Many of these groups or majority white political parties do not have the best interest at heart or does not know how to best to represent the African American race.


    3. Is Malcolm X advocating for violence or is he merely predicting it, should voting rights not be successfully implemented?
    He states that African Americans do too much singing and not enough swinging implying that peaceful protest takes too long and is not very effective.

Explain your answer. He agrees with this passage because of what is stated that all men are equal meaning any human being should have the same opportunity as anyone else. In addition if the government is to stray we the people have the right to eliminate and not be subjected to second class citizens.

  12. 1.) Being a Black Nationalist, Malcolm X is saying that he supports the separation of the blacks and whites. He is a true freedom fighter and believes that all blacks should stay within the communities of other blacks and be able to have control within their community. Some characteristics of a Black Nationalist are; self-help, control, empowerment, and independence within your own community.

    2.) Malcolm X feels skeptical about white politicians and liberals because the changes that were said to happen never did. He never saw a genuine care from them when it came down to the black communities.

    3.)Malcolm X is merely predicting because he is saying that they do have a right to vote. However, if they do not, then violence will eventually take place.

    4.) Yes, I feel that Malcolm X agrees with the passage because he felt that the black community was not accepted by the white society. He feels as though the black people are not acknowledged equally as whites. So the only way to come to some type of common ground is to form a new government in the black society.

  13. 1.Malcolm X calls himself a “Black Nationalist” which means he is Muslim but his nationality is black and helps to under his black community people that they need to help their self. He wants to make his community as self-governor and control their community to have better life. He also said, when people live in a same community they should think about their own community not to think about religion. Some of the characteristics of this ideology are self-governor; self help community, educate their own community people and make people to understand the philosophy about political and economic.
    2.Malcolm X is so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help Black Americans because white people does not keep their promise and they have failed in the past to help the Black people. White people behaves good with Black people when they need the vote from them, other than that White people do not help Black people to get educate, not even in economical way. He said that White people becoming richer day by day and Black people becoming poorer day by day.
    3.I think, Malcolm X is predicting it because he is saying that Black people are not going to fight physically to change any types of rule. He just wants to have better live for his own community. He wants that to speak up for their own community.
    4.Yes he agrees with the passage. He stated that Black people are not accepted by White people. White people use the Black people for their own benefits. He believes that white people have more priority that Black people in the society that is why he wants to make his own community.
    5.I think its “B” was Malcolm X’s thesis in the speech because he thinks that White people have their own identity already but Black people don’t have any reorganization in the community. That’s why he wants to make his own Black community to help Black people.

    When Malcolm X calls himself a Black Nationalist, he is referring to himself as someone who will fight for the rights of black people. Rights that they have been deprived off from society. He wants equal rights for all. A few characteristics of black nationalists ideologies are unity, self-determination, and independence from white people.

    Malcolm X is skeptical because white people are the reason why black people are in the position they are now. The politicians do not have the best intrest of blacks in mind, they never did and never will.

    Malcolm X is very much advocating violence as the only way of achieving voting rights. He gave the example in his speech “liberty or death”.

    Malcolm X does agree with excerpt, it is pretty much the basis of his whole argument. Black people have been deprived of all those rights, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They expect to be treated all equally.

    1) Malcolm X calls himself a “Black Nationalist.” What does this mean? List a few of the characteristics of this ideology.
    As a black nationalist “…you should control your own, the politics of your community, the economy of your community, and all of the society in which you live…”
    2) Why is Malcolm X so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help the cause of Black Americans?
    For a number of reasons, one being the fact that those politicians classified African American’s as second-class citizens and tried to tell them that they were free. And also, he mentions the only time you see the politicians is during election times and if you vote for them you’re a chump cause they never help you after they win.

    I believe he was just predicting it. He was saying if they don’t get the chance to make there struggle apparent there will be problems because they are at a point in which they no longer care about anything.
    “I hope that the white man can see this, 'cause if he doesn’t see it you’re finished. If you don’t see it you’re going to become involved in some action in which you don’t have a chance.”

    -“When this country here was first being founded there were 13 colonies. The whites were colonized. They were fed up with this taxation without representation, so some of them stood up and said “liberty or death.” Though I went to a white school over here in Mason, Michi- gan, the white man made the mistake of letting me read his history books. He made the mis- take of teaching me that Patrick Henry was a patriot, and George Washington, wasn’t nothing non-violent about old Pat or George Washington. Liberty or death was what brought about the freedom of whites in this country from the English. They didn’t care about the odds.”

    This passage supports the theory that Malcolm X agrees with that passage. He was implementing the black man should do like the whites did when they were fed up with the regime.

    Whites have already organized themselves as a “nation” or race that merely looks out for its own interests; rather than integrate into this organization, Blacks must do the same things in their own community by maintaining separate political and economic institutions. Though out the entire speech he talks about black nationalism and concludes with “So, I say in my conclusion the only way we're going to solve it - we’ve got to unite in unity and harmony, and black nationalism is the key.”

  16. 1. What Malcolm X means when he calls himself a “Black Nationalist” is that he is a freedom fighter for the political, economical and social freedom of the black people. The philosophy of this ideology according to Malcolm X is that African- Americans should be in control of the politics and the economy in their communities. The political philosophy attest that African- Americans should be educated on politics of this nation through programs that will make them politically aware, enabling blacks to vote for someone that has their interest at heart. The economical aspects of this philosophy is that black’s need to form their own communities by creating businesses for themselves. Blacks need to elevate themselves by becoming independent through separation from the whites and by taking control of the economy, education, housing and businesses in their own community.

    Malcolm X is skeptical about the white politicians and liberal because they gain control of the economy, education, jobs and businesses of the black communities through the pre-text of integration. The white politicians uses lies, trickery and false promises to manipulate Negroes to fight for their cause. Creating the illusion of making a difference for the black community and the promise of the American dream. Yet, no blacks have benefited from placing a white man in power, they have only suffered from being entrapped.

    3. Malcolm X is not advocating for violence but merely predicting that violence is inevitable considering that historically revolutions are bloody. According to Malcolm X the government has continue to violate the civil rights of people and it is time to stop being passive and take action. Instead of sit-down action, blacks need to “start doing some standing and some fighting”. As Malcolm said “the ballot or the bullet”, meaning that either government give blacks the right to vote or they will have no altered but to raise arms.

    4. Yes, I believe that Malcolm X agrees with this passage because he states that “this government has failed us” therefore action has to be taken on a higher level. Because the government have failed the blacks, separation is the means to freedom. This can be done by forming a separate community where the black man can be his own master economically, socially and politically.


    5. Option (b) accurately summarizes Malcolm X’s thesis in his speech. He states that the whites look out for themselves and it is time that the black people do the same. African- American need to seek their own interests instead of allowing the enemy to oppress them politically and exploiting them economically. They need to establish themselves by creating businesses and investing in their own community instead of relying on the whites.

  17. 1. As Malcolm X describes, all the freedom fighters like himself are not only ministers and do not only fight from one front of the problem but on all fronts. Black Nationalism is a philosophy based on social, economical, and political issues. Black Nationalism covers a common fight against a common enemy. Politically, a black man should govern his own community (black community) and control the politics of that community. Economically, blacks operate their own economy to gain their own capital. Socially, Black Nationalism ignores the differences in religion of a community and focuses on the common struggles of the members of the community.
    2. Malcolm X is skeptical about trusting white politicians because blacks have never gained anything good after they put their trust in the whites. Malcolm X exclaims that black people are trapped because the whites have failed them. As the whites get richer, the blacks get poorer. White people have constantly gives the blacks false hope when it comes to voting for the whites because the black communities still become ghetto and do not have any say of how their community is run.
    3. Malcolm X wants people to wise up, he is not advocating violence. However, as a result, people are becoming fed up as they realize the unfairness from the government. As described, a racial powder keg can cause more destruction for a country because people do not care who is in the way of hurt. Malcolm X knows there will be violence coming. If the black people are not heard voting may not be successful. Just like when George Washington fought for freedom of colonization and the matter became liberty or death, the black will either vote for a ballot or a bullet.
    4. Malcolm X does believe in what the Declaration of Independent claims however, he does not believe it happens. The black are not happy and are not treated as equals because they do not have their own system to rule their community by. Blacks cannot go into a white man’s community and do whatever he pleases. Blacks are deprived of their rights.

    This paragraph summarizes Malcolm X thesis because in short it’s stating exactly what Mr.X wants the Black community to do in order to succeed and be free as a community. He wants them to build and create businesses in their own community to generate money instead of having the Whites take over, the same way how whites are separate with their business Blacks should be the same way.. this is mine this is yours notion and way of living. Plus, he emphasizes how education is important not plain American History which is wrong and deceitful yet the real history and the knowledge of business.

    A Black Nationalist is a "freedom fighter." One who fight against a common enemy (white man) and live in accordance with the black nationalist philosophy; which is "to control [your] own, the politics of your community, the economy of your community, and all of the copiers in which you live should be under your control."

    Why is Malcolm X you so skeptical about whether white politicians and white liberals can be trusted to help the cause of Blacks Americans?

    Malcolm X believe that the white politicians and liberals are hypocrites and liar. Acquanted with blacks just to get their votes, after feeding them with false beleifs and propaganda. X also believes that the whites on looks out for the white, and blacks should do the same.

    Is Malcolm X advocating for violence or is he merely predicting it, should voting rights not be successfully implemented?

    He was clearly advocating violence. Making statements such as "it'll be the ballot or it'll be the bullet. It'll be liberty or it'll be death." The use of such words illustrates his support of violence. In the even where such demands are not met, X indirectly states that violence is less of a prediction, and more of a certainty.

    X agree to this declaration because it supports every thing he stand for and is fighting for. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, equality among all as appointed by God, and the right of the people to overthrow the government if they fail to uphold and protect their rights. These are the matter at issue; the things that are being violated. And so X supports for this declaration as he believe all would be well is such rights are preserved.

  21. 1. The main point for identifying himself as a “Black Nationalist” was to establish early on what and who he was fighting for, black people.
    Malcolm X characterizes the Black Nationalist as a political philosophy that fights for the black community, where blacks can control the politics and politician in their own communities. He also rejects the acceptance of white politicians to come into black communities around voting time only. He supports black only communities, where black would also support their own politically by supporting black candidate, economically by controlling the jobs, opportunities, economy and trade within the community, socially and educational wise by providing social support for one another in times of need and by creating a re-educating program to provide Blacks the necessary knowledge and experiences.
    2. Malcolm X has always been skeptical about trusting white politicians and white liberals because it is his believe that if the white wanted to change the situation that blacks find themselves in, he would have done so already. So he believes that the white has been part of the systematic effort to keep Blacks in subjection.
    3. I do not think Malcolm X was advocating violence but he was highlighting the plight of Blacks within society and merely making the argument that once the status quo stay the way it has been that they would be wars between the oppressor and the oppressed. Voting rights was always suppose to be guarantee to all because it is part of Blacks constitutional rights, like any other living in America. So should not have been about successful implementation of voting rights, sorry.
    4. Malcolm X’s messages one can argue was totally base on this passage of the Declaration of Independence because while there was a government in place, that government seemed to only support the rights of the Whites. So in retrospect, the government would have been seen as illegitimate in the Blacks eyes but how would the Blacks do away with that government when they were in the minority? To this end is where Malcolm X was calling for a virtual state within a state with Blacks having their own communities and political establishment independent of the white man.

    5. Though both statement kind a reflect the end point of Malcolm X hopes, most would argue that statement B sums up what he was looking to establish in the US. I’m skeptical if statement B was ever possible to he was truly ready to try this hypothecs because it surely seem to have been working for the white man.

  22. 1. According to Malcolm X Black Nationalism “means that the black man should control the politics and the politicians in his own community”. A characteristic is to understand that building the economy in black communities means keeping the currency in the community. You do so by opening up businesses in one’s own community, which leads to jobs. Another is to elect governmental officials that fully represent the black community, and that inquires one to dig deep in to political and unravel the truth from the lies.
    2. Malcolm X is skeptical because they were the ones who set up the corrupt system and they were the oppressors. Also because previously entrusting them with the support of the black community did not improve anything in the black community, only the white communities bettered.
    3. He is not advocating violence he is merely pointing it out. He stated the fact that never in the history of societies was there a revolution without bloodshed. He also mentioned that “America is a unique position…this country can become involved in a revolution that won’t take bloodshed. All she’s got to do is give the black men in this country everything that is due to him.”
    4. Yes, he does agree with this part of the constitution. He is actually trying to reeducate his people that it says so in the very fabric in which the nation was created that the people have the right to abolish what is not working. If the government is not holding to their original creed the people are to come as one and starting one that works, it is there right.
